Kentucky Children's Health Insurance Program (KCHIP)

Overview:

The Kentucky Children's Health Insurance Program (KCHIP) provides health coverage at little or no cost to uninsured children who qualify. Kentucky implemented the KCHIP program, which provides free or low cost health care in 1998. Children who are enrolled in KCHIP Phase II, receive the same comprehensive benefits as traditional Medicaid. These benefits include: office visits, dental care, immunizations, mental health, pharmacy, vision care, hospital care, behavioral health, Early and Periodic Screening, Diagnosis and Treatment (EPSDT) (Well Child and Special Services),** hearing care, family planning services pharmacy lab testing and X-rays, Home Health Care Therapies (Physical, Speech and Occupational- in Limited Settings), Durable Medical Equipment, transportation (emergency and non-emergency)** renal dialysis, hospice care, nursing home care, early intervention for infants and toddlers with disabilities, and services provided by school districts for children with disabilities. Some additional specialized services for people with disabilities are also included. **Children in KCHIP Phase III do not receive EPSDT Special Services or Non-Emergency Transportation.

Application Process:

Applications, which may be returned by fax or mail, are available at various locations throughout the state and are also available online at www.kidshealth.ky.gov.

Applications may also be completed in a face-to-face interview at your local Department for Community Based Services (DCBS) office. Appointments may be scheduled or walk-ins are accepted. Additional Information:

Children with existing health insurance may qualify for Medicaid but not for KCHIP. KCHIP is only for uninsured, low income children until the child's 19th birthday. Children whose family income falls between the 151%-200% FPL and qualify for KCHIP would not be eligible for non-emergency transportation or EPSDT Special Services. Their KCHIP card would differ from the others in physical appearance by being light purple and saying "Kentucky Children's Health Insurance Program Identification Card on top of the card.
