KY Accessible Information Technology in Schools (AITIS) Project

Promising Practices: Kentucky's Accessibility Policies and Practices at Work

Pulaski County Public Schools

The Pulaski County School System has made two important accessibility changes in its information technology environment. First, the district now provides an Assistive Technology Resource Specialist position to assist schools with AT best practices. The AT Specialist has coordinated ongoing trainings for Read & Write for teachers, instructional assistants, and students with and without special needs. School staff have begun to scan materials for student access with a screen reader. Scanned copyrighted documents are being stored on the school server with only selected students and teachers having access. In addition, the district is pursuing funding for an auto feed, duplexing scanner for scanning multiple documents, textbooks, etc. The AT Specialist also communicates as needed with district technology staff to ensure that AT needs are adequately and appropriately addressed in technology planning.

The Pulaski County district also received a grant in January 2005 to create and/or update all district and school webpages, which will require Section 508 compliance. The district has completed modifications to the district website and the creation of a teacher webpage template that is 508 compliant. Teachers use this template to create individual webpages; therefore, teacher webpages are also 508 compliant. Visit teachers.pulaski.net/ to see progress made in this area. The last step of this project is to complete modification to individual school websites
