Event Description: The United 874K Coalition Advocacy Event is going to be different this year! Instead of a one-day event at the Frankfort Convention Center, we will be hosting THREE Advocacy Days at the Capitol. In order to accommodate the coalition members and to focus on different groups of legislators each day, we have divided the state by CMHC/ADD regions (see attached listing of regions with their counties and legislators):

Wednesday, March 3, 2010 - Bluegrass and Northern

Event Description: Dyslexia is not just a reading and spelling problem. It is also a language-processing disorder. Dyslexia impacts 15-20% of the population. Symptoms can appear as early as age one. Come learn the unique warning signs of dyslexia, as well as the latest brain and genetic research from the National Institutes of Health. Find out which screening tools are most reliable and which remediation programs are research-based "best practices" for children with dyslexia.

Event Description: Come check out the tremendous number of ways you can use this visual support software program with your students! This is a great opportunity for teachers and para-educators working with non-verbal students, ELL students and others benefiting from combining picture symbols with written words to encourage language and communication.
BoardMaker offers over 44 languages which can support students and families learning various languages so don't think of it as just a "special ed" tool!
Participants will learn basic/advanced skills and be provided with numerous additional resources, hundreds of templates and other helpful classroom tips and techniques to engage all learners.
Come prepared to create a bounty of materials to take back to your classroom! (Bring your personal flash drives--highly recommended!)

This is a great opportunity to learn & share basic computer skills such as: creating a digital image by scanning a book into the computer, cropping/rotating/cleaning up digital images using software already on your computer, creating audio files by recording your voice into the computer using a free software program, proofing audio files and making audio corrections to your audio/WAV files, and creating picture support materials using Mayer-Johnson's BoardMaker software program. We have created step-by-step directions to assist basic-level computer users!
Our new Library of Digital Accessible Books needs your help so that more children can have access to literacy.
Don't be shy, come join us!

This program eligible for Disney's Give A Day-Get A Day and United Way of the Bluegrass's Concert in the Park Events.
